Questions / Answers
01Installing a wheelchair lift or ramp in a building+
If a lift needs to be installed in the building’s stairwell, a ramp built outside the building, or another part of the common property adapted to make the building suitable for a person with reduced mobility, an apartment owner may install a stairwell lift or build a ramp outside the building without obtaining agreement from the other apartment owners.
All work must comply with construction requirements. The Riga City Council Welfare Department, in cooperation with the Riga Social Service, provides municipal funding for the provision of lifts to individuals. Funding is available up to EUR 10,000 per lift.
More information is available on the Riga City Council Welfare Department website.

03Why does an apartment need a smoke detector?+
Fire is one of the most common problems that can damage property and harm health or even cost lives. When a fire starts, the time taken to detect and contain it is critical. Seconds determine the scale of the disaster, as fire can spread very quickly. A readily available and easily installed smoke detector sounds a loud alarm if smoke from a fire develops in the home. Early detection, particularly during the night, increases the chances of extinguishing the fire before it causes significant property damage and improves the chances of escape. According to available statistics, installing smoke detectors in apartments reduces fire fatalities by up to 75%.
04Building renovation options+
Why renovate your building to improve energy efficiency?
One of the most important reasons is a significant reduction in heating energy consumption. Projects completed under the previous programme achieved average heating energy savings of 40–60% after building renovation. At the same time, comfort in apartments improves: in Soviet-era buildings, heat distribution varies greatly between apartments, leaving some too hot and others too cold. If the heating system throughout the building is also upgraded during renovation, residents gain the ability to regulate the temperature in their apartments individually.
Renovation gives a building a new, modern appearance and significantly extends its service life by improving its protection against environmental effects.
After renovation, the risk of emergencies decreases significantly, unplanned emergency repair costs fall and building maintenance costs are reduced in the long term.
Improved comfort in apartments and a modern building appearance also increase the value of the apartment property.
